Guide to Sessions
The 2006 Annual Meeting offers delegates educational options in a variety of different formats. The following definitions are offered to assist delegates in understanding the features of each individual session type and to help them select the kind of instruction best suited to their educational needs. Admission to AAAAI educational sessions is reserved for members, delegates, press and exhibitor/delegates only. Guests and exhibitors will not be admitted.Allied Health Session
Allergy and Asthma for the Health Care Professional (AAHCP) Program
This program is designed for health care professionals who assist with and provide care to persons with allergy, asthma and immunologic disease, specifically nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, medical technologists and medical assistants.Clinical Research (CR) Program
This program is designed for a combined physician/allied health professional target audience, including any professional who performs, coordinates or is involved in clinical research studies in the fields of allergy, asthma and immunology in an academic, industry or private office setting. This will be an exciting opportunity for allied health professionals and physicians involved in clinical research to meet and network.Medical Administrators (MA) Program
This program is designed to meet the needs of administrators and office managers who work in allergy offices, clinics, managed care settings or hospitals.Course
A course is designed as a teaching instrument to introduce or update knowledge in a specific area of allergy and immunology. A course covers fundamental subject matter not covered in symposia, workshops or seminars, and prepares the audience to be better able to participate in these other learning experiences.Dinner Symposium
A dinner symposium is a session organized in partnership with industry, that presents controversies in treatment and practice. The instructional format of dinner symposia varies. Some present information in pure didactic form, others incorporate interactive elements such as pro/con debates, question and answer sessions or audience response systems.Featured Poster Session
This poster session on Sunday will feature science that the AAAAI Annual Meeting Program Committee deems of high significance in the field of allergy/immunology. This session will be facilitated by senior investigators whose research is related to the science being presented.Interest Section Forum
Each Interest Section will have a two-hour activity on Sunday that will include an education session and business meeting activities.
Keynote Session
A keynote session features high-profile speakers that appeal to all Annual Meeting delegates. These special one-hour sessions will occur on Saturday and Monday.
Member Service Program
New this year, the AAAAI is pleased to offer its members with a number of programs designed to provide information critical to the successful practice of A/I from some of our related organizations. These sessions will be held Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings before each day’s Plenary Session and will include presentations from the ABAI on maintenance of certification (Saturday), the FDA on regulatory issues affecting the specialty (Sunday), and the JCAAI on legislative issues affecting the specialty (Monday).Oral Abstract Session
An oral abstract session features new research findings submitted for the 2006 Annual Meeting. These sessions will include a 20-minute presentation from a senior investigator followed by oral presentations from selected abstracts related to the investigator’s research.
Plenary Session
A plenary session is the premiere educational session of the meeting, presenting topics in didactic format to all Annual Meeting delegates. There will be four plenary sessions, one each on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.Poster Session
The poster hall, featuring poster presentations of abstracts in thematic groupings, will be open Saturday through Tuesday from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Authors will be present with their posters Saturday through Tuesday from 9:45 am to 10:45 am.Pro/Con Debate
A pro/con debate is a one-hour session in which two presenters provide opposing views on a controversial topic. The pro/con debates will take place on Sunday and Tuesday.Seminar
A seminar is a discussion-based session in which facilitators lead a small group of participants in an interactive discussion on a defined topic. Seminars are limited to 25 participants.
Journal Club Seminars – This seminar format features discussion leaders who will select high impact papers from the past year and distribute the papers to registered participants prior to the Annual Meeting. At the seminar, participants will discuss the articles and indicate as to why they do or do not accept the conclusions and/or illustrate important aspects that might impact clinical practice.
State-of-the-Art Session
Each Interest Section will host a one-hour session to review a topic that is of broad interest to the members of the Interest Section. The seven sessions will be held concurrently on Saturday.Symposium
A symposium is a didactic session.Workshop
A workshop is an interactive session. They are classified into eight sub-types according to the format of interactive instruction provided:Audience Response – This workshop format uses aggregate responses from participants to case-based scenarios to tailor the delivery of information. Audience members will respond via audience response keypads and the results will be shown on a screen.
Bring Your Own Patient (BYOP) – This workshop format gives delegates the opportunity to submit cases from their own practice for discussion. The session leaders will collect all of the submitted cases and select three to five cases for discussion. It is hoped that this format will “personalize” the meeting for delegates.
Hands On – This workshop format gives participants the opportunity to actively manipulate devices or practice procedures in a supervised setting.
Highlights of the Day – This workshop format features representatives from each Interest Section who will summarize “highlights” from sessions they attended throughout that day. On Tuesday, Interest Section representatives will provide a recap of the major issues discussed at the Annual Meeting.
Hot Topics – This workshop format is dedicated to discussion of issues that have high impact on the field of A/I that received attention in the past year.
Panel Discussion – This workshop format gives expert panelists and participants the opportunity to respond to thematic questions posed by a moderator.
Q and A – This workshop format involves didactic presentations followed by a question and answer period. Year in Review – This workshop format involves didactic presentations reviewing the latest information published on specific topics. The Year in Review sessions will take place on Saturday and Monday.
