AANMA and the Consumer Health Alliance for Safe Medication (CHASM) continue to make progress against unlawful pharmacy manufacturing of nebulizer medications.

Senator Grassley (R-IA) wrote a 13-page letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) summarizing concerns, and requesting answers related to information AANMA provided his office about unlawfully manufactured nebulizer medications that are being substituted for FDA-approved medications and reimbursed with taxpayer dollars.

AANMA also presented evidence at a briefing hosted by Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA) showing that state laws and pharmacy boards, and federal policies do not protect patients.

Tennessee has recently passed legislation requiring state-wide food allergy management plans for schools. Similar legislation exists in Massachusetts and Connecticut. FAAN continues to push for federal guidelines which would be available to states interested in developing food allergy plans.

As part of our efforts to educate teens with food allergies, FAAN is hosting a teen summit November 3-5 in Arlington, VA. Teens and their parents will participate in a weekend of educational seminars, interactive workshops, and opportunities to share experiences and strategies. Let your teen patients know about this unique opportunity. Additional information is available online at www.faanteen.org.

IDF President Marcia Boyle and Jordan Orange, MD, PhD, FAAAAI, Chair of the AAAAI Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases Committee, testified on the impact of Medicare reimbursement of IVIG on patient access, at the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health Hearing in July, in Washington D.C. Speaking on behalf of patients, Boyle implored the Subcommittee to take emergency action to restore access to IVIG in all sites of care. Congressman McCrery thanked Boyle for the leadership role IDF has taken on the access to IVIG issues. He said that without the efforts of IDF, Congress would not understand the level of devastation that has occurred for this community.
