Miami Beach: what a trip
By Travis A. Miller, MD, University of Michigan

The AAAAI Annual Meeting in Miami Beach was truly a remarkable event. The Annual Meeting offered Fellows-in-Training (FITs) outstanding science, endless sunshine and sandy beaches.

Thanks go out to Chyh-Woei (Charles) Lee, MD, MPH; Mitchell H. Grayson, MD, FAAAAI; Mark H. Moss, MD; Charlotte Cunningham-Rundles, MD, PhD, FAAAAI; Amal H. Assa’ad, MD, FAAAAI; and the Program Directors Assembly and faculty who helped coordinate the FIT educational and social events.

Highlights included the Future of the AAAAI Reception at Bongos Cuban Café and annual favorites such as FIT day, the Chrysalis Project, travel grant scholarships and discretionary educational time.

The Fellows-in-Training program really raised the bar to offer new and expanded events for attendees. This year featured the debut of several new highlights, including:

  1. Meet the Professor – Over 40 prominent faculty from across the country came to have breakfast and socialize with FITs.

  2. Practice Management – Marshall Grodofsky, MD, graciously agreed to give a starter course on the business of allergy practice. He was asked to make this presentation after resoundingly positive feedback from FIT participants in the AAAAI Practice Management Workshop.

  3. NAIA-FIT Mentor Program – Allergist/immunologists from the New Allergist/Immunologist Assembly were paired with FITs to exchange ideas on careers, research, balancing work and personal life, networking, etc.

The AAAAI FIT Committee encourages all FITs to get involved. We meet in person once a year, in conjunction with the Annual Meeting, but we use conference calls and e-mail throughout the year for planning and coordination. If you have ideas, energy and constructive suggestions, please contact FIT Committee Chair Caroline (Kay) C. Horner, MD, at cchorner@utmb.edu, or Reaca Pearl at the AAAAI executive office at rpearl@aaaai.org.
