Associates look to the future
By Frances Washburne, Associates President, 2006-2007

As we recall with fond memories the beautiful Miami beaches of Florida, the Associates to the AAAAI are looking forward with anticipation to the 2007 AAAAI Annual Meeting on the equally beautiful beaches of San Diego, CA. As we look ahead, plan to bring your families to another beautiful AAAAI meeting location, abounding with sun, sand and mild temperatures. Since the meeting will be earlier next year, February 23-28, it will provide us a welcome respite from cold weather along with fun, interesting things to do and places to see in southern California. We are already in the planning stages of a memorable visit for you and your guests.

2006 Annual Breakfast and Business Meeting
The Associates Annual Breakfast and Business Meeting, held on Sunday, March 5, 2006, was a festive occasion, well planned by our Immediate Past President, Helen Ownby, PhD. The theme, “Beach Party, Fun in the Sun,” featured prizes for the best-dressed members and guests who wore their favorite beachwear. Children present were able to participate in face painting, and took home sand toys and balloons as souvenirs. The lucky winner at each table received a colorful beach towel, and the entertainment was easy-listening music provided by a jazz trio from the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

The breakfast was also the site of final bidding for those participating in the Not-So-Silent Auction, our annual fundraiser, in which we raised even more money for our scholarship awards program.

In anticipation of next year’s meeting, Phyllis Rubin, Vice President-Annual Programs, and her committee are busily planning our 2007 breakfast meeting. We always welcome new spouses and friends to our gathering, so watch the Associates section of the AAAAI Web site, www.aaaai.org, for more information. You may also contact John Augustyniak at the AAAAI executive office at jaugustyniak@aaaai.org, or myself at fowashburne@bellsouth.net.

Scholarship update
We continue to be very proud of our Award of Excellence Scholarship Program. This year, we awarded scholarships to young people in 16 different states, and, for the first time, we had a scholarship recipient from Canada. The total scholarship money awarded this year was $35,000, with 32 students receiving $1,000 scholarships and 30 students were given $100 merit awards.

Scholarships are funded primarily by a donation from the AAAAI Board of Directors and our annual Not-So-Silent Auction.

Annual Not-so-Silent Auction
We are excited to continue this fundraiser, so we can provide even more funding for our scholarship program. Under the able leadership of Margaret Quel, Vice President of Fundraising, we hope to generate even more exciting auction items for the AAAAI Annual Meeting next year in San Diego. If you have a donation, please contact Margaret at marinaquel@hotmail.com or John Augustyniak at jaugustyniak@aaaai.org.

We need everyone’s help to make our meeting, February 23-27, in San Diego exciting and fun. Mark your calendars!
