Academy News: September 2005

Report from the Associates
By Helen E. Ownby PhD, Associates President, 2005-2006

Our committees have been busy since they left San Antonio, preparing for our next meeting in Miami Beach. The Associates’ Scholarship Committee is excited to announce that the application for the 2006 Award of Excellence Asthma Scholarships is now available online, in the Members Center of the AAAAI Web site, www.aaaai.org.

Virginia Fawcett and her committee have been busy redesigning the application process to make it more user friendly, not only for our applicants, but also for staff and committee members who will be grading the applications.

Please note that there are two significant changes for 2006. First, both American and Canadian high school seniors diagnosed with asthma are eligible for these awards. The second change is that this year the initial application process will be electronic. A secondary “verification form” will need to be downloaded by the student once they have completed the first part of the application.

Both applications will need to be completed and returned to the Scholarship Committee, postmarked by January 6, 2006. Those postmarked after that date will not be accepted and their application will be considered incomplete.

In 2005, we received over 2,800 applications, and we anticipate even a larger number this year. Many more of these applicants are worthy of scholarships than the 39 recipients that were given awards this year. Each of the 42 Award of Merit recipients would have been eligible, had we been able to provide for them. Eighteen of the students who received awards, either Scholarships or Awards of Merit, were patients of AAAAI members or Fellows. Please make certain that your qualified patients are aware of this fantastic opportunity.

In an effort to increase the number of awards we can offer in 2006, the Silent Auction Committee, headed by Francene Lifson and Margaret Quel, have started gathering items for our third annual Not So Silent Auction. As in the past two years, all of the proceeds from the auction are contributed to the Asthma Scholarship Fund. Please contact our AAAAI staff liaison, John Augustyniak, jaugustyniak@aaaai.org, or Francene Lifson, flifson@aafasocal.com, if you are interested in making a contribution to the auction or to the Associates Scholarship Program.

We look forward to seeing you and your spouse at our auction and other activities in Miami Beach.
