Workforce Snapshot

To keep members informed, key workforce information relevant to the field of allergy/immunology will appear periodically in Academy News. This information is based on the research efforts of the AAAAI Workforce Committee.

The distribution depicted in this month’s Workforce Snapshot marks the continued position of internal medicine as the most common training background among fellows completing training.

In 2002, the majority of fellows completed graduate training in either internal medicine (61%) or pediatrics (34%). It should be noted that 2000 was the only year where pediatric training was more common than internal medicine.

The high proportion of fellows trained in internal medicine is similar to the pattern of practicing allergists. The majority of practicing allergist/immunologists are also more likely to have a background in internal medicine.
