Academy News: October 2003

RSL forums connect AAAAI with members

A new series of leadership forums for Regional, State and Local Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Societies (RSLAAIS or RSLs) will provide greater direction for the societies and enhance complementary efforts to advance allergy/immunology.

The forums, suggested during the RSLAAIS strategic planning session in March 2003, offer presidents and vice-presidents of state and local societies an opportunity to clarify their role and that of the AAAAI. Hosted by AAAAI President Lanny Rosenwasser, MD, FAAAAI, the forums include an overview of the AAAAI’s 2003-2005 Strategic Plan and the RSL Strategic Plan, and a synopsis of the goals and projects of local societies.
The first RSL Leadership Forum was held in Napa, California. Additional forums will follow, including a forum for Region 6: Rocky Mountain on October 18 in Denver, CO. Through 2004, an RSL Leadership Forum will be held in all seven regions.

The Region 7 forum served as a springboard for the new retreats and included discussion on the role of the RSLs and how the AAAAI can complement their state and local efforts.

“The program was very well received and the presidents and vice presidents appreciated the personal approach of Academy and their efforts to communicate important information at the grass roots level,” said Sheldon Spector, MD, FAAAAI, Region 7 President and RSL Retreat Committee member. “I received excellent feedback from attendees.”

During the Region 7 forum, participants discussed four main areas of improvement, which will be the focus of future forums: Communications, TPD/RSL Liaison, Advocacy/Legislative Issues and Links with Lay Organizations. Common issues in each of the four areas include:

Communications

  • Enhance sharing between local societies
  • Raise awareness of patient care issues occurring on a local level

RSL/TPD Liaison

  • Enhancing local mentoring opportunities for Fellows
  • Improve relationships between Training Program Directors (TPDs) and RSL leadership

Advocacy/Legislative Issues

  • Use Governors structure to disseminate information
  • Add links to AAAAI Web site regarding important issues on local level

Links with Lay Organizations

  • Improve lines of communication with physicians and lay organizations
  • Share policies AAAAI uses to evaluate relationships with external organizations

Region 5: Midsouth

Region 6: Rocky Mountain

Region 7: California

All forums will include discussion on these four areas of improvement and address local needs and issues in each region. Forum participants will also learn about the AAAAI’s standardization of allergy skin testing and immunotherapy forms, and receive training on interacting with the media.

The Federation of RSLs is designed to be a forum for grassroots allergist/immunologists and the Academy to exchange information, and discuss shared initiatives.

“These forums will be an important opportunity for outreach and a true ‘win-win’ situation for the Academy,” Spector said. “They will help provide direction for the small societies.”

The RSL Leadership Forums are supported through an unrestricted educational grant from Schering-Plough.
