Promising year ahead for regional, state and local allergy societies
By Sandy Gawchik, DO, FAAAAINew strategic plans for the Federation of Regional, State and Local Allergy Societies were formulated during a retreat at the 60th Anniversary Meeting. The purpose of the retreat was as follows:
- Build a strategic plan for the RSLAAIS that affirms a shared view of how the organization supports the mission and the strategic priorities of the Academy
- Further clarify the unique value of the RSLAAIS for the societies and the Academy
- Shape clear roles and responsibilities for the regional governors
- Identify approaches to reaching and engaging active, semi-active and dormant societies
- Develop 4 to 5 key goals to guide the organization over the next few years, each with concrete steps, designated responsibilities and guidance for Academy staff
The retreat was supported by an unrestricted education grant from Schering.
During the retreat, the first steps were taken to rewrite the RSLAAIS mission statement. The new mission statement confirms the commitment of the Federation of the Regional, State and Local Allergy Societies to serve as a forum for dynamic interchange between the Academy, local allergy societies and members. The main points were to:
- Disseminate academy benefits and requests to societies
- Communicate local needs, concerns and goals to the Academy and to assure Academy responsiveness to those concerns
- Facilitate information sharing between local societies, as well as encourage and support local societies in goal setting
In order to get a clearer picture of the general health of the local societies, a questionnaire was developed by Hugh Windom, MD, FAAAAI and Malcom Blumenthal, MD, FAAAAI. It was sent to the presidents of all local and regional societies, and will be followed up with a phone call to each of the society presidents. The goal of the questionnaire is to enable RSLAAIS to continue supporting the needs of the individual societies.
Our goal is to hold regional leadership forums for the individual societies. It looks like a very promising year for the RSL, which was founded as the vehicle through which the grass root allergist can communicate their concerns to the Academy.
