Academy News: January 2002

Start planning now for FIT Day
by Kerry Drain, MD, AAAAI FIT Committee Chair

The AAAAI Fellow-in-Training (FIT) Committee has been busy planning FIT Day for the Academy’s 60th Anniversary Meeting in Denver. Special FIT programming will be held on March 7, 2003.

The morning program will include basic science topics that may be found on the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI) exam, but may not have been covered extensively during fellowship training. Morning topics include an "Overview of the Immune System," "Transplant Immunology," "Novel Therapies in Immunodeficiencies" and "Hyper IgM Syndrome."

Afternoon speakers will present background on their topic and then present cases illustrating particular teaching points relevant to their topic. There will be an interactive session in the afternoon where fellows answer questions from each speaker at the end of their presentation. The questions are written to be reflective of what one might see on a Board exam. The afternoon topics will include "Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis," "Drug Hypersensitivity," "Anaphylaxis" and "Hereditary Angioedema."

Fellow-in-Training (FIT) programming will be offered March 7 during the Academy’s 60th Anniversary Meeting in Denver.

Lunch will be served between the morning and afternoon sessions. This year, mentors from various A/I career backgrounds, such as academics, clinical practice, clinical immunology, basic science and lay organizations, will be seated at tables with FITs. Each mentor will be available to answer a range of FIT questions about their particular field of interest.

Be sure to plan your Annual Meeting schedule in advance to get the most from your experience. For example, attend a workshop on a topic that is not well covered in your training program. There are wonderful sessions on urticaria, insect allergy and immunodeficiency, just to mention a few. These sessions are moderated by the leaders in their respective field, so take the opportunity to learn and meet the thought leaders in your particular interest area.

The AAAAI FIT Committee encourages all FITs attending the 60th Anniversary Meeting to take advantage of all the Academy’s Annual Meeting has to offer.
