Participate in monthly conference calls
Practice administrators discuss management challenges

By Peter B. Murdock, MBA, AAAAI Practice Management Committee member

The AAAAI Practice Management Committee continues its mission to improve and support the administration and organization of allergy practices. Committee initiatives center on enhancing practice management of allergy practices through the collaborative efforts of our membership. One of the primary vehicles is an ongoing teleconference call allowing interested managers to participate in an issue-focused discussion of a topic related to the unique management challenges of allergy practices.

During our initial teleconference in October, the focus of the discussion was management of immunotherapy. We addressed how to determine insurance coverage, staffing and scheduling options. The content focus was not on theoretical matters, but practical applications of policies, procedures and techniques that work and do not work. Several changes were implemented in our practice due to the information shared during the one-hour call.

We will continue to offer this forum on a quarterly basis. In June, we will share information about a subject near and dear to all medical administrators, “managing” physician time and patient care. We will discuss patient care in an allergy practice, scheduling of new and established patients, including testing, allergy injections, and utilization of space and support staff. Addressed in our discussion points will be:

  • how we as managers can assist our physicians to maximize productivity, and minimize patient inconvenience and waiting time
  • how can we utilize practice resources effectively to provide quality medical services

We all bring valuable experience and knowledge to the mix. This collective management wisdom can lead to constructive solutions and further the AAAAI mission to enhance the management of allergy practice nationwide. Please consider participating in our next teleconference meeting. It may be the most productive hour of time you can invest in the management of your practice.

For information on the June conference call, please contact Lauri Sweetman at the AAAAI executive office at (414) 272-6071 or via e-mail at lsweetman@aaaai.org.
