2007 Annual Meeting News
State-of-the-Art Sessions focus on research, clinical topics
The State-of-the-Art Sessions at the 2007 Annual Meeting will focus on cutting-edge research and clinical topics from each Interest Section. These sessions will be held concurrently on Saturday, February 24, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
To help members learn more about upcoming Annual Meeting sessions, in this and future issues, AAAAI News will highlight the topics covered by each Interest Section in their individual State-of-the-Art sessions.
Food allergy, Anaphylaxis, Dermatology and Drug Allergy (FADDA): Role of Food Allergy and Patch Testing in Eosinophilic Esophagitis and Gastroenteritis (#2504)
Moderator: Stephen C. Dreskin, MD, PhD, FAAAAI
Presenter Jonathan M. Spergel, MD, PhD, FAAAAI, will discuss the diagnosis and different management options (dietary vs. medical) for eosinophilic esophagitis. The effectiveness of atopy patch testing in identifying the causative food allergen in eosinophilic esophagitis will also be emphasized.
Rhinitis, Sinusitis and Ocular Diseases (RSOD): Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Inflammatory Effects (#2507)
Moderator: Linda Cox, MD, FAAAAI
The RSOD State-of-the-Art Session will focus on the clinical presentation(s) of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and their impact on allergic respiratory disease. The session will also cover the diagnostic evaluation of the suspected OSA patient, and the surgical and medical treatment for OSA.

Symposium highlights new NAEPP guidelines
A special Annual Meeting symposium will provide an overview of the recently updated National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) guidelines:
New NAEPP Guidelines for the Management of Asthma: Expert Panel Report 3 (#4701)

Carlos A. Camargo, Jr., MD, DrPH, FAAAAIThe symposium will highlight the guidelines’ newer aspects of assessment, including a particular focus on asthma control and the new concepts of assessing both impairment and risk.
The symposium will provide new treatment guidelines for the long-term management of both children and adults, including special considerations in both age groups. In addition, it will offer up-to-date guidelines for the assessment of severity and management of asthma exacerbations.
The new NAEPP Guidelines are the first complete national guidelines released in 10 years.

Domestic Fellow-in-Training (FIT) Travel Scholarship
FITs are encouraged to apply for this travel scholarship.
Purpose: A grant to cover travel expenses to the Annual Meeting
Eligibility: AAAAI FIT members in the United States and Canada
Award: Up to $1,000 with an accepted abstract or up to $500 without an abstract
Deadline: November 17

2007 AAAAI award deadlines
The AAAAI will provide $943,000 in 2007 for allergy/immunology research, training and faculty development.
Two new awards will be presented this year, the AAAAI Bridge Grant Award and the AAAAI Women in Allergy Junior Faculty Development Award. In addition, the AAAAI will present two Third Year FIT Research Awards in 2007.

Allied Health members: attend Advanced Practice Course
New this year, Allied Health members may attend a day-long course highlighting case studies in allergy, immunology and allergic disease. The course is designed to provide a program for nurse practitioners and physician assistants that is unique to the allergy practice.
The session will conclude with a panel discussion entitled, “Navigating the AAAAI Annual Meeting.” The panel discussion is designed to assist delegates in determining which sessions best meet their educational needs and developing their Annual Meeting agenda, and will also allow delegates time to discuss session options with their peers.
Allied Health Advanced Practice Course (#1161)

Call for late-breaking abstracts
The AAAAI will begin accepting late-breaking abstracts on November 15.
Submission of late breaking abstracts will be reviewed under the following criteria:
The abstract contains work that is original and has not been previously submitted to, presented at, or is under consideration for any other scientific meeting, including the regular abstract submission.
The work is novel, evidence-based, and has scientific merit. Abstracts selected for late-breaking presentation will feature newsworthy and cutting-edge information.
Authors will be required to explain why their abstract is considered newsworthy.
To be considered for presentation at the 2007 Annual Meeting, late-breaking abstracts must be submitted via the Annual Meeting Web site, www.annualmeeting.aaaai.org, by November 30. A total of 12 abstracts will be selected in this category.
