Annual Meeting 101: Definition of Session Types
Members of the media registered for the 2007 Annual Meeting have complete access to the various educational sessions occurring at the meeting. Educational sessions appear in a variety of different formats. The following definitions are offered to assist the media in understanding the features of each individual session type:
Course
A course is designed as a teaching instrument to introduce or update knowledge of a specific area of allergy and immunology. A course covers fundamental subject matter not covered in symposia, workshops or seminars, and it prepares the audience to be better able to participate in these other learning experiences.
Dinner Symposium
A session, organized in partnership with industry, presenting controversies in treatment and practice. The instructional format of dinner symposia varies. Some present information in pure didactic form, others incorporate interactive elements such as pro/con debates, question-and-answer sessions or audience response systems.
Interest Section Forum
Each Interest Section will have a two-hour activity on Sunday that will include an education session and business meeting activities.
Keynote Session
A keynote session features high-profile speakers that appeal to all Annual Meeting delegates. These special one-hour sessions will occur on Saturday and Monday.

Plenary Session
The plenary session is the premier educational session of the meeting, presenting topics in didactic format to all Annual Meeting delegates. There will be four plenary sessions, one each on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
Poster Session
The poster hall, featuring poster presentations of abstracts in thematic groupings, will be open Saturday through Monday from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Tuesday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Authors will be present with their posters on Saturday through Tuesday from 9:45 am to 10:45 am.
Pro/Con Debate
A one-hour session in which two presenters provide opposing views on a controversial topic. The pro/con debates will take place on Saturday and Tuesday from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm.
Seminar
A seminar is a discussion-based session, in which facilitators lead a small group of participants in an interactive discussion on a defined topic. Seminars are limited to 25 participants.
State-of-the-Art Session

Symposium
A symposium is a didactic session.
Workshop
A workshop is an interactive session. They are classified into eight sub-types according to the format of interactive instruction provided:Audience Response — This workshop format uses aggregate responses from participants to case-based scenarios to tailor the delivery of information. Audience members will respond via audience response keypads and the results will be shown on a screen.
Bring Your Own Patient (BYOP) — This workshop format gives delegates the opportunity to submit case from their own practice for discussion. The session leaders will collect all of the submitted cases and select three-to-five cases for discussion. It is hoped that this format will “personalize” the meeting for delegates.
Hands-on — This workshop gives participants the opportunity to actively manipulate devices or practice procedures in a supervised setting.
Hot Topics — This workshop format is dedicated to discussion of issues that have high impact on the field of A/I that received attention in the past year.
Panel Discussion — This workshop format gives expert panelists and participants the opportunity to respond to thematic questions posed by a moderator.
Q&A — This workshop format involves didactic presentations followed by a question and answer period.
Year in Review — This workshop format involves didactic presentations reviewing the latest information published on specific topics. The Year in Review sessions will take place on Saturday and Monday.
