Definitions of Session Types

Members of the media registered for the 2005 Annual Meeting have complete access to the various educational sessions occurring at the meeting. Educational sessions appear in a variety of different formats. The following definitions are offered to assist the media in understanding the features of each individual session type:

Course
A course is designed as a teaching instrument to begin or refresh knowledge of the broad area of allergy and immunology. A course covers fundamental subject matter not covered in symposia, workshops or seminars, and it prepares the audience to be better able to participate in these other learning experiences.

Dinner Symposium
A session, organized in partnership with industry, presenting controversies in treatment and practice. The instructional format of dinner symposia varies. Some present information in pure didactic form, others incorporate interactive elements such as pro/con debates, question-and-answer sessions or audience response systems.

Interest Section Forum — NEW FORMAT
Each Interest Section will have a three-hour activity on Sunday that will include an hour of education, followed by the Interest Section business meeting and a reception.

Keynote Session — NEW FORMAT
A special one-hour keynote session will take place on Saturday. This session will feature a high-profile speaker that will appeal to all Annual Meeting delegates.

Oral Abstract Session
Oral abstract sessions feature paramount research submitted for the 2005 Annual Meeting. These sessions will include a 20 minute presentation from a senior investigator followed by oral presentations from selected abstracts related to the investigators research.

Plenary Session — NEW
The premier educational sessions of the meeting; presenting topics in didactic format to the Annual Meeting attendance as a whole. New this year, there will be six plenary sessions, one each on Saturday and Sunday, and two each on Monday and Tuesday.

Poster Session
The poster hall, featuring poster presentations of abstracts in thematic groupings, will be open Saturday through Tuesday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Authors will be present with their posters on Saturday from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm and Sunday through Tuesday from 9:45 am to 10:45 am.

Pro/Con Debate — NEW FORMAT
A one-hour session in which two presenters provide opposing views on a controversial topic. The pro/con debates will take place on Sunday and Tuesday.

Seminar
A discussion-based session, in which facilitators lead a small group of participants in an interactive discussion on a defined topic. Seminars are limited to 25 participants.

State-of-the-Art Session — NEW FORMAT
Each Interest Section will host a one-hour session to review a topic that is of broad interest to the members of the Interest Section. The seven sessions will be held concurrently on Saturday.

Symposium
A didactic session, presenting topics of interest to a portion of an individual Interest Section.

Workshop
An interactive session, presenting topics of interest to a portion of an individual Interest Section. They are classified into four sub-types, according to the format of interactive instruction provided:

Audience Response — Aggregate responses from participants to case-based scenarios are used to tailor delivery of information. Audience members will respond via audience response keypads and the results will be shown on a screen.

Hands-on — Participants have the opportunity to actively manipulate devices or practice procedures in a supervised setting.

Panel Discussion — Expert panelists and participants are asked to respond to thematic questions posed by a moderator.

Q&A — Didactic presentations followed by a structured question and answer session.
