JACI Highlights - July 2007
Hefle et al - Consumer attitudes and risks associated with packaged foods having advisory labeling regarding the presence of peanuts
Allergic diseases like asthma and food allergy are common and chronic disorders that are increasing in westernized countries. There are currently no cures for these health problems and many sufferers are frustrated by the lack of curative therapies or have concerns about medicinal side effects. This dilemma has stimulated medical research of ancient Asian medical practices such as herbal medicines and acupuncture. In the July 2007 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Li and colleagues discuss the status of this research and some positive outcomes. They report that controlled clinical studies of 5 herbal preparations for asthma therapy and an herbal formula to be used against food anaphylaxis have shown promise in their effectiveness and safety. Some of these herbal remedies may be available in the near future to allergists for treating allergic asthma and food allergy.
