Jones - Achieving and maintaining asthma control in an urban pediatric disease management program: The Breathmobile
In the June 2007 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Jones and colleagues report on the results of the Breathmobile® Program for asthma management in children from a lower socioeconomic urban setting. Through the use of mobile clinics, teams of asthma specialists provided ongoing care to asthmatic children at schools and county clinics. The study revealed that the main factors influencing control of the children's asthma was the severity of the asthma at the beginning of treatment, the child's compliance with the treatment plan, and the time between visits. Most of the children studied were able to achieve asthma control between their 3rd and 6th clinic visits, although maintenance of control with long-term management was highly variable. Jones' findings show that many children can achieve control of their asthma when barriers to healthcare are minimized and families have access to a structured program of regular asthma care visits, treatment that follows the NHLBI Asthma Management Guidelines, and careful monitoring of their responses to treatment that will allow development of a personal therapy plan.
