JACI Highlights - March 2007

van Gent et al – Excessive body weight is associated with additional loss of quality of life in children with asthma

In the March 2007 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, van Gent and colleagues studied whether asthma combined with excessive body weight have a greater impact on quality of life in children than the separate effects of asthma or excessive body weight alone.  Asthma and excessive body weight frequently coexist, but the exact relationship between the two diseases is unknown.  The authors found that children with both asthma and excessive body weight had lower quality of life scores than children with either asthma or excessive body weight alone.  These findings show that excessive body weight is associated with an additional decrease in quality of life in children with asthma, proving that there is an interaction between asthma and excessive body weight that results in lower quality of life among children with both conditions.
