JACI Highlights - March 2007

Foster et al – Prevalence of asthma in children and young adults with HIV infection

In the March 2007 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Foster and colleagues determine whether HIV-infected children and young adults on antiretroviral therapy (ART) have a higher than expected prevalence of asthma. The authors found that the prevalence of asthma in HIV-infected children and young adults exceeds that observed in asthma studies of youth without HIV-infection. An increased prevalence of asthma in children and young adults with HIV infection may be attributable to improved antiretroviral therapies and immune preservation or reconstitution.
