JACI Highlights - February 2007
Stern et al - Exposure to farming environment has allergen-specific protective effects on Th2-dependant isotype switching in response to common inhalants
In the February 2007 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Stern and colleagues identify the levels of the immune responses to allergens at which farm exposure acts to protect from allergy. Farm exposure was defined as currently living on a farm and/or exposure to stables and/or farm milk in the first year of life. The authors found that farm exposure protected against grass-specific responses but had no significant impact on mite responses. The unique interactions between farm exposure and antibody responses to specific allergens suggest that environmental interventions may need to be tailored to specific allergens.
