JACI Highlights - February 2007

Khetsuriani et al - Prevalence of viral respiratory infections in children with asthma

In the February 2007 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Khetsuriani and colleagues examined the contribution of respiratory viruses to asthma exacerbations in children. Previous studies support a strong association between viral respiratory infections and asthma exacerbations; however, the impact of newly discovered viruses on asthma control is less well-defined. Of the respiratory viruses studied, only rhinoviruses were associated with asthma exacerbations. These results support the need for therapies effective against rhinovirus as a means to decrease asthma exacerbations.
