Williams et al – Race-ethnicity, crime, and other factors associated with adherence to inhaled corticosteroids
Previous studies have shown differences in adherence (how closely a patient follows a prescribed treatment regimen) to inhaled corticosteroids by race-ethnicity, yet little is known about factors which contribute to adherence within these groups. In the January 2007 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Williams and colleagues identify factors associated with inhaled corticosteroid adherence among patients with asthma and among African American patients and white patients. They found that certain environmental stresses, such as area crime, were negatively associated with ICS adherence.
