Scirica et al – Predictors of cord blood IgE levels in children at risk for asthma and atopy
In the January 2007 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Scirica and colleages attempted to identify predictors of cord blood immunoglobin E (IgE), a circulating antibody that triggers immune reactions found in umbilical cord blood, among infants at increased risk of atopy. Elevated cord blood IgE, in conjunction with a family history of atopy, is associated with the development of allergic diseases in children. The authors found that maternal atopy, markers of socioeconomic disadvantage and race/ethnicity, maternal age and infant gender may influence fetal production of IgE. The identification of these definable familial and environmental factors that predict cord blood IgE levels may help the early detection of infants at risk for developing atopic disorders.
