JACI Highlights - January 2007

Ramsey et al – Respiratory illnesses in early life and asthma and atopy in childhood

In the January 2007 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Ramsey and colleagues examine the relationship between respiratory illnesses in early life and atopic diseases at school age. The relation between early life respiratory illnesses and the development of asthma and atopy in childhood is not completely understood. The authors found that this relationship is complex and likely dependent on the type of infection and immune response it initiates. Certain respiratory illnesses in early life can modify the risk of atopy and asthma at school age. Croup and ear infections in early life are inversely associated with atopy. This may further our understanding of the pathogenesis of atopic diseases.
