JACI Highlights - January 2007

Kukkonen et al – Probiotics and prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharides in prevention of allergic diseases: A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial

In the January 2007 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Kukkonen and colleagues study the effect of probiotics, live-health-promoting microbes, in preventing allergic diseases. The recent increase in allergic diseases has been attributed to a relative lack of microbial stimulation of the infantile gut immune system. Probiotics may offer such stimulation. Probiotic bacteria, when administered to mothers in late pregnancy and to their high risk infants in early life, colonized the gut. The authors found that probiotic treatment showed no effect on the incidence of all allergic diseases by age 2, but significantly prevented eczema, especially atopic eczema.
