Radon and Schulze – Adult obesity, farm childhood and their effect on allergic sensitization
In the December 2006 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Radon and colleages study the effects of obesity and reduced microbial exposure, two markers of Western lifestyle, on allergic sensitization. Microbial exposure can occur with farm contact. The authors confirmed the protective effect of childhood farm contact on allergic sensitization. However, they also found that obesity might diminish or even cancel the protective effect of regular contact with a farm during childhood.
