JACI Highlights - December 2006
Appleton et al – Central obesity is associated with non-atopic but not atopic asthma in a representative population sample
Obesity and asthma have been shown to be highly associated. Epidemiological studies have consistently demonstrated the association between high body mass index (BMI) and asthma. However, the relationship between asthma and alternative central obesity measures (waist circumference and waist to hip ratio) has not been assessed in a representative population. In the December 2006 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Appleton and colleagues attempt to determine the strength of this relationship. They found that there is an association between non-atopic asthma and obesity among both men and women. Atopic asthma was shown to be related to obesity in women only. Therefore, asthma should be considered in older, non-atopic, centrally obese, symptomatic individuals.
