JACI Highlights - November 2006

Strunk et al - Mild to moderate asthma affects lung growth in children and adolescents

In the November 2006 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Strunk and colleagues study the impact of mild to moderate childhood asthma on lung growth. Asthma may predispose to significant lung disease in early childhood and potentially lead to development of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) later in life. The authors found that mild to moderate asthma affects lung growth, producing airway obstruction that increases in magnitude from age 5 to 18 years in both sexes, perhaps due to ongoing remodeling of structural and functional tissues in the lungs, and is not affected by early and multi-year controller therapy.
