JACI Highlights - October 2006
Kancherla et al - Mumps resurgence in the United States
In the October 2006 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Kancherla and colleagues studied the recent mumps epidemic in the central United States. Since January 2006, the total number of reported mumps case in the US is 2,597. This represents a marked increase in reported cases in a single year. For example, in 2003 only 231 cases were reported. The majority of the recent cases have occurred in college students age 18-25, and most were vaccinated with 2 doses of measles, mumps and rubella-containing vaccines. Practicing physicians in the US have limited experience with vaccine preventable disease recognition. Poor adherence to recommended dosing guidelines may permit breakthrough in vulnerable populations and is the likely cause of the recent outbreak in the Midwest. Also, inappropriate storage and handling impacts potency which may in turn reduce efficacy. In outbreak settings, recommendations for control and elimination of mumps should be considered in geographically impacted practices in the US.
