JACI Highlights - August 2006

Vu et al – Benzocaine anaphylaxis

Benzocaine is a common agent used for local anesthesia. In the August 2006 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Vu et al describe a patient with a life-threatening reaction to topical benzocaine. The patient felt burning of the mouth immediately after being swabbed inside her lips with topical benzocaine. Within minutes she progressed to experiencing chest discomfort, vomiting, lightheadedness, and difficulty breathing. She ultimately lost consciousness. She was resuscitated, intubated, and hospitalized for one week. The article describes the authors' evaluation and management.
