Kelso et al – Apparent sensitization to latex through a swim cap

In the August 2006 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Kelso et al report a case where a woman reported allergic reactions while swimming. She was found to be latex allergic even though she had never had a job requiring latex exposure, nor ever had surgery. However, she had been a competitive swimmer since prior to the age of 13. This report suggests that individuals who have prolonged exposure to natural rubber latex swim caps may become latex allergic through that exposure.
