Diaz-Sanchez et al – Challenge with environmental tobacco smoke exacerbates allergic airway disease in humans
In the August 2006 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Diaz-Sanchez et al test the hypothesis that Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS, commonly referred to “secondhand smoke”) could interact with allergens in humans to alter immune responses and promote changes associated with allergic airway disease. The severity of allergic airway diseases such as allergic rhinitis and asthma is a consequence of the interplay between genes and environment. These studies provide the first experimental evidence that secondhand smoke can exacerbate allergic responses in humans. This demonstration that ETS can augment allergic airway responses is therefore potentially a public health issue of extreme importance.
