Marks et al - Prevention of asthma during the first five years of life: A randomised controlled trial
In the July 2006 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Marks et al studied exposure to house dust mites and their allergens early in life to determine their importance in the development of asthma and allergic disease. They also studied whether diet in the first five years of life is related to asthma prevalence. Evidence of substantial variation in prevalence rates between ethnically-similar populations living in different geographic regions has implied a role for lifestyle and environmental factors in the expression of asthma and allergic disease. Marks and colleagues found that house dust mite avoidance and dietary fatty acid modification did not prevent the onset of asthma or eczema in high risk children. Further research is required to establish whether other interventions can be recommended for the prevention of asthma and allergic disease.
