JACI Highlights - July 2006

Hissaria et al - Short course of systemic corticosteroids in sinonasal polyposis - A double-blind, randomised, placebo controlled trial with evaluation of outcome measures

Oral corticosteroids have been used for many years in the treatment of nasal polyps but this treatment has never before been scientifically proven to be effective. In the July 2006 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Hissaria et al report on their randomized, placebo-controlled trial which shows that a short course of oral corticosteroids significantly improves the symptoms and pathology of sinonasal polyposis without significant adverse effects. The authors used symptom questionnaires, MRI scans, and nasal photographs to demonstrate this improvement, and showed that these outcome measures correlate with each other.
