Frew et al – Efficacy and safety of specific immunotherapy with SQ-allergen extract in treatment-resistant seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis
Seasonal allergies are becoming increasingly common. Although often mild, allergies can limit the sufferer's social life and adversely affect school performance and work productivity. Specific immunotherapy (SIT) is widely used to treat allergic rhinitis, but few large-scale clinical trials have been performed. In the February 2006 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Dr. Frew and colleagues assess the efficacy and safety of specific immunotherapy with Alutard® grass pollen in patients with moderately severe seasonal allergic rhinitis that is inadequately controlled by standard drug therapy. Across the whole pollen season, they found that symptoms were showing up less frequently in the subjects receiving active therapy than in those receiving placebo.
One season of immunotherapy with Alutard® grass pollen may reduce symptoms and medication usage and improve the quality of life of those with moderately severe hayfever. The hope is that the results of this study will help clinicians in recommending desensitization for patients with more severe allergic rhinitis.
