"I returned home with a new treatment plan and new perspective on life. I was determined to "pay it forward" by giving back to the community that has whole-heartedly supported me. Based on what I learned, I decided to start an educational support program to teach and empower elementary school children to take control of their asthma. To date I have taught nearly 300 asthmatic children from around the country. My program is important to me because it reinforces the education I learned. It helps other asthmatics and the children in my program have become a support system for me."
- Jennifer, 18 years old

"As a state ranked swimmer, my lungs ached and I was constantly plagued by shortness of breath, but I attributed this to swimming outdoors in the winter. I figured my sinus infections, wheezing, and strep throat were things I would have to live with. As the doctor prescribed various treatments, all I cared about was whether I would be able to continue swimming.
In the years that followed our first meeting, my doctor has seen me through numerous ups and downs as I learned to manage my health. He always listens to my concerns and never fails to take them into consideration when he ponders what course of treatment to prescribe. In return, I trust him to help me manage my health in the most effective way. "
- Sarah, 19 years old
Seema Sharma Aceves, MD, PhD "I am very grateful to the AAAAI for awarding me the Clinical ERT grant. "My activities were so limited and I became frustrated with my school performance. My parents were worried that something was seriously wrong with me. Finally, my parents took me to see an allergy and asthma specialist. He immediately diagnosed me with asthma and prescribed a nebulizer and an inhaler. It took a week or so for the medications to be totally effective, but after that, I felt like a new kid! I could breathe better and was able to sleep through the night. I was able to run and play with my friends at recess and my school work improved. Since that time, I have learned how to better control my asthma, and not let my asthma control me. My doctor told me that it was imperative that I learn to manage my asthma."
- Katie, 14 years old
Kevin P. O'Brien, MD, FAAAAI "The ERT award will enable me to pursue one of the loftiest goals of the field of Allergy and Immunology: progress towards the primary prevention of the development of allergies. Up to now most research has focused on treatment alone. As a practicing allergist constantly facing new members of atopic families, this award will allow me to work together with parents to examine a new opportunity to improve the lives of their children."
- Kevin P. O'Brien, MD, FAAAAI

The award definitely helped me make the transition to become a productive and independent investigator and academician. Having now established a foothold, I hope that good work on my part will follow. I am so grateful for the ERT’s support. It has made a difference for me and is reflected in my career’s work.
