Q:

11/26/2012
I have a 12 year old patient that reportedly had hives only within a couple hours after receiving DTap at 15 months old. He tolerates gelatin. His family and PCP would like to know if he can tolerate Tdap and Td booster in the future. Based on reading the parameters and the recommendations in Pediatrics 2008 Woods et al. article, skin testing to DTap (and potentially also DT and tetanus toxoid) would be warranted. Since Tdap is the booster recommended for his age, would you recommend also (or in place of testing to DTap) skin testing to Tdap?

A:

Thank you for your inquiry.

Yes, I would recommend skin testing to Tdap as well as DTap in this situation.

Sincerely,
Phil Lieberman, M.D.
