You had stated last year that you would inquire with Tim Sullivan whether there was any validated skin test or challenge protocol to statins. I have a pt who had throat tightness 10 years ago and I was going to bring her in for a graduated challenge but was curious if the were some sort of protocol or skin testing available. Thanks.

A:

Thank you for your inquiry.

There was no desensitization or oral challenge protocol to statins that I could find in the literature at the time of the last inquiry to our website regarding this issue. However, recently a successful desensitization to rosuvastatin (1) was reported. The article contains a desensitization protocol which you can employ exactly should you choose to desensitize to rosuvastatin. Alternatively, you could model a challenge/desensitization protocol to another statin based upon equivalent dosage calculations.

Thank you again for your inquiry and we hope this response is helpful to you.
