Q:

5/2/2014
We have an elderly allergic rhinitis patient who only reacts in spring. Typically he's fine till a certain day, which he describes as after the trees have bloomed and when the tulips begin to fade. This year that day for him, when he suddenly suffered severe symptoms that "came out of nowhere," was yesterday. Can you tell me what suddenly bloomed in Brooklyn, NY, on May 1, 2014?

A:
Thank you for your inquiry.

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology has certified pollen counting stations. There are two in your area. Here is the link to our website which will give you the contact information for these stations. They do regular pollen counts and can tell you which pollens were in the air on any date the counts are taken.

Thank you again for your inquiry. If you have any difficulty contacting the pollen stations, please let us know.

Sincerely,
Phil Lieberman, M.D.
