Q:

7/16/2013
We have an employee whose PCP wants her to wear gloves that are 100% synthetic-free. I have offered up accelerator-free gloves and/or the use of cotton glove liners, but the PCP does not approve of these options. I have looked online for non-synthetic gloves appropriate for use in healthcare, but have not found any. Do you know of any such glove?

A:

Thank you for your inquiry.

Gloves that are available for use can be seen here. I am not personally aware of any better option than the accelerator-free latex gloves that you mentioned. Most gloves noted at the link below, which are not latex, are intended for those who are latex allergic and very rarely cause problems (although rarely they can).

In summary, the only “natural” non-synthetic gloves of which I am aware are made from latex, and I am not aware of any latex glove less free of chemicals than those which are accelerator-free. The others are, as you know, synthetic.

Thank you again for your inquiry and we hope this response is helpful to you.

Sincerely,
Phil Lieberman, M.D.
