Q:

I was recently asked a question about nickel allergy by a colleague. He often takes out keloids from earlobes as a plastics/ENT doc and asked if nickel allergy can lead to keloid formation-do you know if that is a common complication of nickel allergy? If so, he would consider referring these patients to an allergist to be tested for nickel sensitivity. Thank you for your time.

A:

Thank you for your inquiry.

I am not aware of contact dermatitis to nickel causing keloids, and could find no evidence of such in the literature.

Thank you again for your inquiry.

Sincerely,
Phil Lieberman, M.D.
