Umbilical cord blood storage

Question:

5/22/2018
I have 9 year-old healthy male patient. Father has rheumatoid arthritis and strong family Hx of autoimmune diseases on father's side, mother with mild intermittent asthma and allergic rhinitis due to dust mite allergy. Mother has stored umbilical cord blood and wants to know the latest recommendation. Should she continue paying for storage or there is no longer need to do so?

Answer:

I asked Dr. Charlotte Cunningham-Rundles for advice. Her response is as follows:

"I do not see the reason to do that. It is expensive and with this combination I don’t think one could predict any need for transplant. "

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Daniel Jackson, MD FAAAAI
