2009 Annual Report
"My activities were so limited and I became frustrated with my school performance. My parents were worried that something was seriously wrong with me. Finally, my parents took me to see an allergy and asthma specialist. He immediately diagnosed me with asthma and prescribed a nebulizer and an inhaler. It took a week or so for the medications to be totally effective, but after that, I felt like a new kid! I could breathe better and was able to sleep through the night. I was able to run and play with my friends at recess and my school work improved. Since that time, I have learned how to better control my asthma, and not let my asthma control me. My doctor told me that it was imperative that I learn to manage my asthma."
- Katie, 14 years oldWith your help, the ART will discover new knowledge and a better understanding of these diseases through the support of pivotal, ground-breaking research.
Only .46 % of the total NIH budget is spent on research to find better treatments and cures, yet asthma alone costs our country $4.6 billion in lost productivity each year; Allergic reactions cost an additional $250 million.
What triggers an allergic response? How can we predict who is at risk? What can we do to prevent allergic reactions before they happen?
The answer: Research. The more we know, the better job we can do with our patients.
