May 2008 QUIZ OF THE MONTH . . .

To determine the cause of an anaphylactic event occuring during the peri-operative period immediate hypersenstivity skin tests may be helpful when employed using which one(s) of the following agents. (There may be one or more correct answer)?

  1. Chlorhexidine
  2. Dextran
  3. Morphine
  4. Vecuronium
  5. Thiopental

Discussion
An ongoing study of insect sting reactions at Johns Hopkins Medical School has revealed factors which are predictive of a repeat reaction to insect sting in a previous reactor. All of the above increase the chances of a repeat reaction with the exception of total IgE.
