January 2008 QUIZ OF THE MONTH . . .

Which one or ones of the following factors increases the chance of a reaction to an insect sting in a patient who has experienced a previous reaction?

  1. Skin sensitivity to venom.
  2. A history of allergic rhinitis.
  3. Total serum IgE.
  4. The baseline level of serum beta-tryptase.
  5. Increased basophil response to histamine releasing factor.

Discussion
An ongoing study of insect sting reactions at Johns Hopkins Medical School has revealed factors which are predictive of a repeat reaction to insect sting in a previous reactor. All of the above increase the chances of a repeat reaction with the exception of total IgE.
