Filaggrin is a Risk Factor for Allergic Rhinitis in Atopic Sensitization (Independent of Atopic Eczema, But Only for Asthma in the Context of Asthma)

Summary
The investigators looked at filaggrin mutations in a cross-sectional population of German children (N = 3099) recruited as part of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Children II. They found that filaggrin mutations were a clear risk factor for atopic eczema (as in previous reports). They also found these mutations were a risk factor, independent of eczema, for allergic rhinitis and atopic sensitization. They were a risk factor for asthma, however, only in patients with atopic eczema.
