FeNO Measurements May Not Be Useful in Children

Summary
Doctors Franklin and Stick reviewed the literature on the use of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) measurements in the management of asthma. This review casts doubt on the usefulness of FeNO measurements.

The authors state, "The interest in FeNO is based on the assumptions that FeNO is a marker of asthma and asthma control, and that it reflects eosinophilic airway inflammation. However, the literature remains unconvincing and inconclusive… At present, the cost of including FeNO in management guidelines far outweighs any potential benefits."
