Growing Out of Egg Allergy
Summary
This was a retrospective analysis of 881 patients evaluated for egg allergy. The patients were followed for a median of six years. The results were as follows:
- 4% had outgrown egg allergy by age 4
- 12% had outgrown egg allergy by age 6
- By age 10, 37% had outgrown their egg allergy
- By age 16, 68% no longer had egg allergy
- Higher egg IgE levels predicted persistence of allergy through childhood
- The majority of children with egg IgE levels of 50 kU/L failed to tolerate egg by age 18
- The presence of multiple food allergies also indicated a greater chance for persistence of allergy to egg
