Bronchial Thermoplasty

Summary
Bronchial thermoplasty has been shown to reduce smooth muscle mass in an animal model. There are two human investigations. In these two investigations, it was shown to increase symptom-free days, decrease medication use, reduce mild exacerbations, and decrease bronchial hyperresponsiveness to methacholine.

Dr. Wechsler, in this article, presents a concise and well written review of the issues surrounding bronchial thermoplasty. From his perspective, it holds promise as a new therapy for managing patients with asthma.
