Another contribution to the literature on the protective effect of breast-feeding

Summary
The authors of this investigation studied families in Qatar to assess the effect of breast-feeding on the onset of allergic disease. They performed a cross-sectional survey done at well baby clinics. They looked at 1500 children, all 5 years of age or younger, and their mothers (all age 18 to age 47). One thousand two hundred seventy-eight mothers participated. The study was done by questionnaire.

The long duration of breast-feeding ( > 6 months) was associated with a protective effect regarding atopic disease. Eczema, allergic rhinitis, and wheezing were reduced in children who received greater than six months of breast-feeding compared with those who had less than six months. This observation held regardless of whether the family history of allergy was positive or negative. The authors concluded that prolonged breast-feeding reduces the risk of developing allergic diseases in a "developing country."
