Further evidence for an increase in prevalence of atopic dermatitis
Summary
The purpose of this study was to compare the prevalence of atopic dermatitis in two different random samples of Danish children evaluated in 1986 and 2001. The authors also wanted to see if there was a rise in incidence between between the two time periods. Two samples of children and adolescents living in urban Copenhagen were drawn at random from the Civil Registration list in 1986 and 2001. A total of 527 and 480 subjects participated in 1986 and 2001, respectively.
They found that the prevalence of atopic dermatitis increased from 17.3% in 1986, to 27.3% in 2001. This increase occurred in both males and females. They also found that elevated levels of IgE, airway hyperresponsiveness, and rhinitis were significant predictors of the presence of atopic dermatitis. They concluded that the prevalence of atopic dermatitis increased significantly between 1986 and 2001.
