Factors Correlating with a Positive Aspirin Challenge in Patients with Suspected Aspirin Related Respiratory Tract Disease
Summary
These investigators analyzed factors which might predict a positive oral aspirin challenge in patients with suspected aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease. A total of 243 patients underwent oral aspirin challenge. Gender, the presence of atopy, or the number of sinus infections per year did not correlate with positive challenges. Increasing frequency of previous NSAID respiratory reactions, severity of these reactions, reactions requiring hospitalization, age younger than 40, and poor sense of smell increased the chances of a positive oral challenge.
